Wearing my pedant's hat I have a slight query for 18a.
M stands for a thousand, not a million.
I find using the first letter of many words unacceptable unless indicated. It's happening more and more in crosswords.
For me ' initially a million was extracted' would work.....but then I am a pedant!

Hi Rossim
How would you interpret £1m? I think most people would think ‘m’ means million

Rossim, Chambers gives M = million/millions, so I think it's legitimate. (PS I haven't seen the clue.)

Thanks Malone.
The Roman numeral for a million is actually M with a line across the top meaning 1000 x 1000.

Thanks, Rossim. Your M with the line is also in Chambers, it gets a listing of its own!
