I think 10 dn. should have three words not two as stated, but I'm only starting and could be wrong.

Yes, 10 down is three words, not two, I am still trying to sort out the central part, i.e. the two unclued answers which contain the central 2x2 block.

I am at the same stage as you alwayspuzzled.....maybe the letters of CLUE are in the 2x2?

In the central quartet, the north-east and south-west corners are determined by 5 dn. and 23 dn. respectively. The south east corner cannot be a consonant, thus the north-west corner is determined by elimination.

Thank you for that Harlequin. I have 23 across as the French word for 'moon' (possibly wrong) but I am still none the wiser about the other unclued entry. I shall go back to completing some work for a looming deadline and return to this later. I wish the picture quality on the Captcha images was better.

23d and 28a left to crack.....
28a across particularly no word seems to fit, so must have gone wrong.

Have completed grid but too many possibilities for unclueds in a couple of places.

What does a repeated cryptic clue fixes not only one such entry but also the central 2x2 block mean?

Hi sunray, the central 2 X 2 square will contain the letters "clue". I only had 1 unclued that allowed more than one possibility, 2nd bottom row, and resolved by using "clue".
