Score over half a century, say? 5-3-4

I have "forty per cent" but am at a loss parsing it!!

20 over 50 would be 40%, but I don't see a definition...

I think it’s an & lit with the answer being how you might say 20 over 50. Not a great clue for me. The new setter is suffering from a bit of tryingtooharditis I think.

Tough puzzle for an ST cryptic. It would have suited a Times Crossword Club Monthly cryptic puzzle.

Paul McKenna of Mephisto is my bete noire, but I usually complete with just a little help from Bradford's. This one needed a couple of word searches.

I have only recently started doing the ST cryptic. When my Times subscription doubled to four quid a week I decided to submit all of the Prize Puzzles in a selfish attempt to claw a little bit back - childish really!!
