Snipe is a game bird popular with shootists. And snipe can also mean to shoot (like what a sniper does).

I answered fallen idol to the crossing clue ,which gave me the N .The clue is ,One down-erstwhile he ,r o,(6,4)I originally thought second word was ,hero but all letters were wrong .I am reasonable certain of letters I have for both words ?a?l??, ?d?l.Of course I could be completly wrong ,which wouldnt surprize in the least!
