The clue is 'Rhymester's introduction to The Pit and the Pendulum say (9)

The answer would appear to be Poetaster. I can see several bits poe and taster, but can't put the whole thing together, I would be most grateful for any help. Thanks in advance. Roger

I think it might be Poe Taster = introduction (to the work of Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote The Pit and The Pendulum).
