May have gone wrong as very few words fit! A clue would help me.

Thanks. I think I'd made the decision it couldn't possibly end in -ailing as there was word meaning ailing in the clue.
I'm finished now. Was is just me who found bottom left much harder than the rest! Some very odd words.
Parsing for 42a would be nice to know!

A is an abbreviation for arsenic
A tanka is a Japanese poem

Brendan, the grid shows 5 letters. ?ES?A

....or maybe not. The answer I thought of doesn't really work with the plural 'Insects' so I'm probably wrong.
