To rogassimo and chrise: in the solution there's a number minus the symbol for 10.

oodl, is the middle of poodle, as in the chassis of a canine

I've sorted out most of my remaining problems, but I have one left.
1a Bread, spinach and turnip, a turnip's first eaten (7)
My definition is "bread". I see some, but not all, of the letters of "spinach", and A Turnip, but it really doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

Thanks minty - I see it now, but I can't say that I like it! (In fact, that's terrible!)

Like others I'm having trouble parsing lots of them but have got past caring if I'm sure they're right, However, for 25 across I can remember a well-known book by 11 that fits but I can see no connection with Saladin or sin or anything. Any suggestions? Did he write more than one 5, 1, 3 book, perhaps?
