A L is a pound which, when added to later would become lateral - on the side ?

LATER would be my suggestion.
L is "a pound"
"on he side" would indicate the final R.
I am mystfied by the rest.

There seem to be errors in the numbers, by the setter ?

My apologies for the mistake it should read (4,3)
I think the answer is PEASANT but the clue in the newspaper shows the (4,3) which is confusing as well
