Hi jigjag, I hate their use in puzzles as they are "usually" dialect dependent (particularly urn & earn which are anything but to me), hence the ?.

Thanks - I think they will be in most of the country but in parts of Merseyside/Cheshire, the "uck" is a longer gutteral sound.

urn and earn are the same to me!

We have been discussing this on the Pedants United thread the last couple of days. I think we all dislike them in puzzles

When I was teaching in Blackburn, the kids all loved to hear me say "dust", as they pronounced it "doost"!

I would have to be very precise to pronounce "duct" and "ducked" differently. David Willcocks, the famous choral conductor, got his choirs to voice "ds" as "ts", as it came across better in the choral mix.

Our singing teacher at school made us voice js as chs, as in rechoice for the same reason.

We had to sing "Israel" as "Is - rye - el". I cant remember the reason, but I think it sounds better than Is - ray -el which we get today.

I take it that the old "what's a Grecian/ Egyptian urn?" joke does not work for you.
