I got into a big argument a few years back with rambler (remember him?) about whether names ending in "s" should have an apostrophe s for the possessive - i.e. should it be Chris' or Chris's?

(My side was the latter.)

Hello, ChrisE. I do remember, vaguely, some discussion on that. I'd definitely go with Chris's (Chris' looks distinctly odd), but I think anything belonging to James was worse - I didn't like any version.

St James`s Palace and St James` Park both seem to be correct !

Perhaps` it`s understandable some persons` are confused - like

Thanks Malone, glad you enjoyed it. I hope you didn't mind the understudy role!

Jigjag, you see 'understudy', I see 'save the best for last'!

Dear Mattrom

Many pedants have been baffled by your clue (posting No. 5 on this thread). After days of puzzlement, we give up. What is it please?

It is thought to have been an attempt at the world's first self-deleting clue, but it has not worked, possibly because the timing device malfunctioned, as it was posted outside "normal solving hours 9am - 5pm GMT".

Of course, since it mentions spam, it may have circumvented Malone's anti-spam software.

Any hints from Ostraya, Austria or Scotland would be appreciated!

In case Mattrom doesn't look in, post 5 referes to a spam entry that was added to this thread a couple of nights ago. The really strange thing is that the spammer's name didn't appear as the 'last post', but the post before it did. Also, the 'replies number' didn't change, but instead still showed 4 posts. I think that's why Mattrom felt a brief explanation was warranted, because it appeared (and disappeared) without leaving a trace - very strange.

Brendan

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to explain it. I only look in once or twice a day and did not notice any spam. I see Mattrom's brilliant clues on Clueless and Peer Review (just won again!) and thought she had come up with the devious idea I suggested!

Hi Jigjag and all,
Sorry it wasn't anything as interesting as a clue. As Brendan says, post #5 was originally #6, after some spam. It is confusing when the spam post disappears, as to what has actually been "reported"
