I noticed that you said that you admire Eleanor of Aquitaine. She features quite prominently in my favourite historical mystery books, "The Queen's Man" series by Sharon Penman. The central character is one of the nicest heroes you could hope to meet.

She also appears in some of the Alys Clare historical detective books.

Thanks Chris, I will get some of The Queens Man and look into the other author. I managed to get Eleanor into my own book because she promulgated the Laws (or Rules or Judgements) of Oleron in about 1160, requiring (eventually) sailors to help others in distress. At first it was more about saving the cargo, obviously, but later included the crews as well.
One day I picked a book from my library shelves called (I think) The Judgement of Oleron. At the check out, it would not go through. It wasn't a library book! I was allowed to keep it, fascinating.
