It would help those without the puzzle if you gave the clues…..
And please use question marks of missing letters, instead of crosses.

rig- outfit

a role- a part

3d: Freddie Mercury = singer (def)
d- divine
i - one
freed - liberated
mercury- element

1a: carefree = unconcerned (def)
ca- about
ref (e) ree - arbiter

Johnpuzzle, I think you've missed Elle's post - with the clues, the answers and the parsing.

I parsed 3 D as below:

divine= DD
one = I

liberated = FREE

divine one in liberated = FREDDIE

because D for divine and I for one
in FREED (liberated) would become FRE(DI)ED or FREE(DI)D

Yes, I like "DD" and "free" better, Raghu!
