I have w_a_s as the first word. But can't find anything that fits what I thought was an anagram. Am I off the mark here?

The mention of an apostrophe helped enormously in solving 8d. It led to me completing the right hand side apart from 18ac. What is the definition? I'm pleased to say that one of your last two (24ac) was one of my first two.

But I'm having trouble with the left hand side. I may have an answer for 13d Spanish Steps short of energy dry up - entertainment barely? (3,6) but would be greatful for some hints

I would also be grateful for some hints for 13ac Backing of king sufficient, say (3,7) I think it begins with T but have very few crossers.

Finally, I did fill in the letters for 12d suggested elsewhere on the stream but can make nothing out of them. Further hints might help unlock that one. I'm off to bed now but will pick up any replies in the morning.
