I am actually doing a puzzle where the goal is to find an 8-letter word that answers the clue given. However, you get more points the more often a letter is repeated. Anyway, the one I am stuck on is where the clue is:

Time regulator _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I dont fully understand the scope of the clue. Obviously clock would be an example, but what regulates time exactly? Could "Calendar" be an answer by any chance?

Pendulum sounds most likely to me. It regulates the mechanism in the clock.
There being two u's in the word might be significant for your extra points.
