Yes it was a mis-aligned rubber bung, he took the keyboard apart and apparently it jammed "scissor" spring? Sounds a bit technical to me.

Re your space bar Helena I was thinking cryptically speaking it was perhaps working ok before i.e. it was barring spaces! I think with that sad observation I will go to bed.
