I've spent more than enough time puzzling over the final 3 clues. I'll send my entry off anyway, with quite a hefty charity donation. But I'd love to know the answers!
8(b) near a farmhouse P???OMI????
39(b) especially in Scotland E??RST?????
40(b) Shetland's peaty soil R??PHA

Thank you, Rusty, tho' the Y doesn't seem to tie in with the other clues.

Quiztime: Results of the Quiz won't be published until the end of February, by which time I'll have forgotten all about it!

Crosstitch, "prevalent" is the clue for 8(B).

And "land...near a farmhouse" should give you: I ?? IELd.

39(B) begins with H and ends with S.

I'm still stuck on 9(C), 20(C) and 26(C)...are these in Chambers?

Thanks Lecrack. I hadn't included enough of the clue in answer to 8(a)! And I'd included 'prevailing' in clue to 8(c). So I've now solved 8(b).

Now for your queries: clues to 9(c) and 20 (c) make use of the vagaries of English spelling! 26(c) think further afield than UK!

Hope this helps

Many thanks, crossstitch, although I don't quite follow the vagaries of English spelling for 9(C) and 26(C). Any further hints? I just got 20(C)!

9(c) is more to do with pronunciation. For 26(c), see my previous hint

Thanks again, crossstitch, I've travelled outside of England for 26(C). 9(C) is very tricky...I have a word beginning with I and ending with N.

I have the answers for columns 1 & 2 which are very straightforward. Column 3, on the contrary, does not flow smoothly and naturally. Did you experience this also?

Lecrack, have you got column three at last? Terrific!
