38. Appearance of Rector arguing in part of church (5)

The answer seems to be Front for appearance.
R in Font.

But is Font part of church?
And does arguing mean insert?

Font is a vessel for baptismal water. But far-fetched to mean part of church.

Thanks.

I'm as baffled as you, sunray. Perhaps it's yet another very bad clue.

Arguing is one of the superfluous words - see the preamble. The clue looks ok to me.

The extra words were quite cleverly done, deceptive in places - such as here! I don't think font= part of church is too bad. It's not great, but not wrong. A font is part of a church in the same way that an altar is, or a pew etc.

Thank you both.

My question about meaning of font still stands.
Is a vessel in church part of church?

Sunray, I know the font is a 'vessel', but isn't it a big hefty piece of stone, a large item? It's not a vessel in the same way as a cup is. Would you accept an altar as being part of a church?

Thanks malone.
Chambers defines it as a vessel but Collins defines it as:

a large basin, now typically supported by a pedestal, for holding water to be used in baptizing

So it can be part of a church.

(I am glad that captcha is back to a tick mark)

Glad you've got it resolved, sunray - it's annoying if a clue niggles away at you!
