Parse please 17d;

Satire developed by comic hero

Answer appears to be ANTHRAX but can’t parse at all! Please help!

Sorry - Anag. of Satire + X (a comic hero - X - Man presumably although I'm not certain)

The other clue, by = X (multiplication)

17d Asterix is an anagram of "satire" with "x" being "by" i.e 2 by 2 = 4

Niger is N being the last letter of Caravan with "re" (on) and "gi" being a US Private backwards
