A couple from today's Herald:

4A Yell about critic oddly getting the quicker route (8) - SHORTCUT

Surely, to get RTC in the middle, this should read:

Yell about critic oddly avoiding the quicker route

and

27A Significant, with no right to be powerless (8) - IMPOTENT

A strange spelling of IMPORTANT???

Agree on both counts Seamus
rtc = critic without the odds

Perhaps a transcription error in 4a, getting meant to be going ?

going would make the clue work - don`t think proof readers exist anymore...replaced by robots

Hi Marty, I also considered that but the surface as it stands, in my opinion, is poor hence my suggestion.

So it's either double-duty or a misprint - either way it's poor for a published puzzle !

I totally agree Marty (unless we're talking some form of &lit, personally I can't justify "double duty" in wordplay. As to the other clue, I'm totally at a loss but not all that surprised. Again In my opinion, the Herald 20+ years ago, crossword wise, couldn't decide if was "competing" with the then broadsheets or tabloids in terms of quality/degree of difficulty.
