Well, Chess does show one, ie a double s, so I thought it was fine! Glad I could help.

Chess Doubles is very popular in schools in the North West, so it is an excellent clue

Jigjag, I missed this earlier. Yes, I thought it was a smart little clue. I've always detested chess, ever since my brother insisted on teaching me how to play.

How about the game of chess played at the mad hatter's (1down) tea party?

I think you would enjoy chess doubles. It is 2 v 2 and in each pair one has white and the other black. There are 2 boards and captured pieces are passed to partners who can put them on the board instead of making a normal move. Children love it, although I am not sure why.

I dont know about this. Was chess played in Alice in Wonderland?
