9 across. Metal used in the fashion of a Spanish gypsy lady. Where does zinc come from? Tziganka, gitana?

I really don't know if this is correct but Chambers has ZINCALA as the feminine for 'A Spanish gypsy', and if you put the last three letters in the front you get - A la Zinc or 'In the fashion of Zinc'. Very tenuous, I know.

Not tenuous at all. Zinc a la is a 100% win. I can now bin my Herald. World dictionary zincala gives my Russian tziganka. Thanks

Glad to help Max, if all the clues are like that it looks to be a very difficult crossword!
