This was a wonderful puzzle.
Must have taken weeks to design.

Preamble says one answer is an abbreviation.
Which one?

Thanks.

Sunray, yes - this was a terrific puzzle. There's an earlier thread, also with praise.

I think 36 D was the abbreviation.

Yes a masterpiece.
Think it was anns at one down. Chambers said it was an abbreviation.
As in your first post on other thread!

Lumen, my Chambers doesn't show that, anns, as an abbreviation, but it does show Ad Fin as one.

Glad I could help, sunray. Even though it didn't make any difference to the puzzle, it can be annoying if you're still wondering about something in it!

You are right, although ann comes from annate, it is not actualy noted as an abbreviation. Colloquial I guess, and appropriate for today's date! (being Scots like myself)

Thanks, Lumen. I wondered if you had an older Chambers with 'ann' given as an abbreviation. I checked 'Ad Fin' when I did the crossword - I remembered when I re-read it today!

Sorry, Lumen, I forgot to add something - I don't think the word could really be thought of as 'colloquial' when Chambers gives it as 'obsolete'!
