Picked up Telegraph today, resulting in my all time worst performance on a weekday puzzle.
Just three of the ones I didn't get:
9a Favourite child in difficult situation in African country (8)
26a Composer to give a verse new setting (6)
18d Horse with energy carrying everyone over street (8)

Thank you for the answers, would never have got these.
Galloway is a horse is it? Who knew?
Literally no one in the whole world has heard of Edgard Varese, not even his parents.
Benjamin means favourite child? Really? I'm guessing this is a Biblical reference but I'm not a Christian so might be wrong.
No idea who this setter is but he or she needs to lay off the obscure proper nouns and go back to basics – clues with a bit of fun and wit and clever word play that, however difficult, lead to words that might be known to the solvers.

Well, I knew that a galloway is a horse - and funnily enough, so does Chambers dictionary!
