not any old American hero (7)

I have T?E?E?S and I am confident that the answer is Theseus, but why, especially the old? I see the us. Possibly not any could be these?

I think the setter is indicating "these" as not any, but "these" particular ones ?

I read it as being specifically 'These' as opposed to 'Not.... any old' (thing)
