a cake is a sweet thing; a bar of soap is often called a cake of soap

I think that is very poor and unfair clue, not supported by Chambers in any way!

I remember writing in "cake" and thinking "that might not be right, but I'll be cross if it isn't".

I think it can be justified - I'm surprised that Chambers hasn't heard of a "cake of soap". See
