Happier to have hint rather than answer ( as with Guardian Prize crossword)

If the word 'to' is not supposed to be there, I can see the answer (he said, cryptically).

The 'to' isn't in the clue, I've got the magazine. It reads badly without it, but shows the answer immediately!

Thanks, stevea600 and Malone! The extra 'to' was a late-night typo on my part but I had still wrestled with it. As usual with cryptic clues, the impossible becomes blindingly obvious once solved!
