Many thanks Terry. 17d I had wrong and I was not aware of alph. Thats why we do it to learn I suppose! all done now thanks again.

I didn't know that ALPH was a river. It just seemed that it had to be the answer. I googled alph and lo and behold it's a sacred river in Xanadu (in the poem "Kubla Khan" by Coleridge).

Why 'short' in 8d?
