Drawn a blank with the last one:

8d Eton accepts such rarely, governing body say (7)

DAY ? E ? S

I'm reasonably sure of the word, just can't get the second part of the clue, so hints gratefully received, thanks.

Are you sure of the "e" ? Might it not be a straightforward anagram?

Of course, yes, thanks Ginge, it's the occupants, not what they're sleeping in. I was using one of the alternative spellings for 18a, and wasn't quite sure of the parsing for its last letter either.
I'd better take the chance to check the one other which I wasn't 100% sure of: 5d. I have the French cold Mediterranean wind, only with the first two letters replaced by 'E', but can't find any reference to that word...?

Thanks again.

Hi astrodan, I didn't do this puzzle so I can't help further without details of the theme, which I appreciate might take too long to outline. However, if no one else comes forward ...

Hi astrodan
If I've guessed your answer correctly (you haven't given the clue), a more common form of the word would have an O before the E.

Hi all, sorry, yes i should have attached the clue:

5d US heat's disturbed rest over US city rising (6)

Spoiler alert below..

ES ? RAL They're all checked letters except for the ?, which must be a T if the anagrind is right.

Cheers.

Hi again astrodan, chrise is spot on as are you. The "US" in the clue indicates American spelling, the "est..." spellings heading in Chambers refers to "oest...".

Yes , ESTRAL would be the American spelling of OESTRAL, which means "on heat" (biologically), so "heat" might be close enough (though a bit looser than I would like!)

..."heat" should be "oestrus/estrus" rather than "oestral/estral"

Thanks again ginge, chrise, that devious surface successfully sent me off hunting weather related heat, winds etc, rather than the biological sort...

Could the possessive apostrophe in "heat's" allow the use of the -al rather than the -us ending? The two check answers for the -al ending are too long and affect too many other answers to be changed.
