They're both wrong, jigjag. The third letter of 3d and the 1st and 3rd of 32d. They're both thematic.

thanks. In that case it must be feeder (which I did not think of) and is thematic as you say.

I thought copse was thematic but I must have 39A wrong but I dont see why.

Thanks for your hint - I have got it now, and finished.

I am probably being pedantic but does 1D work. I have put in the plural ending in -s, to fit in with the wordplay, but if I remember my schoolboy Italian correctly, the plural of feminine nouns changes "a" to "e", as in casa, case.

What is the plural in Chambers (which I dont have)?

Jigjag, Chambers doesn't specify a plural - which indicates it's just the 's', I think.

Thanks - I will take your advice and leave the s in.

I suppose the word has now become an "English!?" word, like stadium with an s as plural. Personally I hate "stadia" which just sounds contrived.

Jigjag, I've checked out Merriam Webster and Collins. Both of these dictionaries give both plurals, the 'as' and the 'e'.

Thanks for checking that - the 2 versions make sense - and I have remembered my Italian which I am pleased about.

Jigjag, I welcome any chance to have a reason to look in dictionaries, so I was quite happy. Well done on remembering the Italian. It's strange how some parts linger in our brains, others vanish completely.
