Trouble is close has so many meanings. Could the answer be 'cease' and you have another letter wrong?

I always find the quickies difficult - too many options.

The L was the last letter of IMPERIL for which the clue was endanger, and the S was the first letter of Soldier for which the clue was warrior, The E was last letter of RUE, the clue was regret.

All other letters fit OK.

Looks like they have given the answer rather than the clue!...8. Close (5) being the clue and the answer letters are -L-SE

That thought also crossed my mind. Not the first time it's happened.
