Help with parsing

15a returning bird loses minutes eating a fruit (6)

From remaining letters I guess it’s “ tomato” but I can’t work out why

There is a bird called a "motmot".

It's a bit obscure. There's a central American bird called a "motmot". Take one M out of that and put an A in, the go backwards.....

Thanks both. Ironically i do a bit of birdwatching (in UK) but have never heard of a motmot. I’ll go and look it up to see what it looks like
