Thing about this is that I already know the answer from letters already in the clue, but have no idea how the cryptic components lead to the answer.

"Touch down on river following try-out of plane" (4,6) - last four words leads to the answer "TEST FLIGHT" but how does that come out of "Touch down on river following"?

TEST is the river (in Hampshire, I think)
F is "following"
LIGHT is "touch down" (land)
