Sorry Aristo - No contribution from me this week as I do not fully
understand the expression ; never came across it before and the
various meanings given in chambers etc... don't seem to help me -
I still don't grasp it!

Thanks Chris, I vaguely understand what is meant in the first
paragraph but would not feel confident to use the expression
myself (and I know nothing about ice hockey or other similar games!)
I think all the presumably very clever clues offered by everyone have

Hi Aristo - I think my problem is that I can't relate it to a French term,
since it seems to be translated in many various ways, according to the
context; It may very well be commonly used, but I simply never
came across it. I am starting to have a vague idea of its meaning
though.

I think it is brilliant that you write very good clues in a foreign language. I doubt I'd have heard of face-off had not one of my sons once played ice hockey. No, I didn't go and watch!

I like paul # 5, mattrom # 21 and chris # 9. Spike 2 at #25 made me laugh (esp as my real name is there!) but I am voting for
