18d - Pickled like a herring - C?N?E?

Keep coming back to CANNED but I can't parse it.

Sorry to drag this out. "CANNED" seem too right to be wrong, but it gives me a problem with 24a: Cradle-to-grave biography: "Boris's London Transport". Can't see anything for 24a except LIFE STORY (though I can't parse "Boris's London Transport"). But that gives me a Y in CANNED where the E should be. Help!

The C and the N are definite - first and third letters - in Canned.
