I'm sorry that this is very late but I've just finished (I hope) this crossword and am unable to parse 17a.

I'm afraid that I'm struggling with the rest.

with 'ice' (diamonds) reversed inside

Ah. Thank you. I was fixated on the diamonds being the D at the end. I can put the paper in the recycling with an easy conscience now and get back to my book (reading it, not writing one).
