I'm stuck on 3d. Sudden and often unexpected difficulty or problem. (5)
I've got E?C?R but can't find a word to fit. Any suggestions, anybody?

EXCUR fits but can not parse.

Thanks rusty and stevie. 'Excursion' appears in my Oxford dictionary so that makes a possible link.

3D is FACER. As far as I remember, 1A is STAFF

19d & 1a I had Jedwart stave so staff is the alternative spelling.
