Thinking about 2d, maybe "Good" is doing double duty, providing the G and the def?

Lad can be male or female (as in stablelad).

Not very happy with the top left corner. Assuming 2D is GLAD, I have

1A Macbeth e.g. (8) - REGICIDE
3D Make 2 (5) - CLEAN
4D Room for 2 (6) - DRUDGE

Anyone have better ideas?

What's 2, Seamus?
REGICIDE looks good - Macbeth was an example of one.

Yes, but it was a long time ago.

I think Thurber's piece on Six Day Bicycle Racing was one of the funniest I ever read.

I don't know that one, Seamus, and neither does Google. Can you remember in which collection it was published?
