9A - Comment on what one needs to make a mate a man (8) A?N??A?E. Got to be ANNOTATE but how does it parse?

I thought this clue was quite tricky, I think it's A N Not A TE in order to convert the word Mate to Man.

Can anyone help with the parsing for this...

This is an anagram of Arsenic and O(ld) but then where does Lace fit in?
