Times Crossword 27,108, clue 27 across,

I see that hedge is clued by 'Avoid a straight answer'. But I cannot see how it is clued by 'What makes a good barrier?' All that I can think is that it is to do with the Good family of 'The Good Life' fame, the couples presumably having a hedge between their gardens - very weak clue if this is the case. Any help welcome. Thanks in advance. Roger

Chambers Dictionary has "hedge", and one of the definitions is "barrier".
