Last one and stuck like a bluebottle on flypaper! 8 dn French art, for example - its enthralling society's principal writers (9) e?e?e?s?s

The only word I can think of is ELEVENSES but cannot make much sense of the clue. ELEVES is the French word for pupils over ENS.
Can you fathom it out ?

I am thinking of something like EXEGEISTS.

Only problem is I don't think there is such a word!
But maybe it will trigger some other thought or idea that will be productive.

ELEGIASTS is another thought. (If the third E was an I)

I have just realised that I have some wrong letters in this one and having corrected that error find that the answer is essayists! Thank you Francis and Sammy and sorry for leading you up the garden path!
