For the first time for some weeks this has held me up for rather longer than I wished, though admittedly the protracted coverage of the Tour de France hasn't assisted.

Thanks to those who enquired earlier - I never would have thought of 27D without assistance. I'm still baffled by 49D as the despairing poet was, I thought, A H Clough, not as it turned out to be. However I'm sure someone will tell me why I'm wrong.

I'm still stuck on a few & would welcome assistance with :
30A - Judge savaged scoundrel after artillery backed ordinary soldiers (10)
?????R?T??
&
24D - Historic city reduced in particular view of the past (10)
?E?????E?T

Thanks in advance...…….

49 Blake was the poet - move the 'e', the last letter of 'verse' forward (moving end of verse to earlier position) to give Bleak, despairing.
