bridles.... to check or restrain...bit of a long shot...protect a containment indicator for the l + e of large plus anagram of birds!

Jazzgirl. How about space for 4d. Cap going up the way (north). Cap=better.
I don't see why some clues ignore two letters though and some one.

My other suggested answers now fit in with crossers .
