Final two queries:
1in28 across, don’t understand why repent
2 26 across have sa?e but having looked in chambers cant find a word that fits (though mine is a 2016)

28ac is a 'double definition' clue, repent[1] and repent[2] in Chambers.

26a is an abbreviation for 'king' in an abbreviation for stamped addressed envelope (ie 'enclosure wanting something in return'); 'cause' functions as a noun for definition purposes.

Chambers 2016 is even better than 2014 - I've no idea why Azed still recommends the 2014 edition, which had a number of words accidentally omitted that were reinstated in the 2016 update.

It generally takes a few weeks to get used to Azed's particular 'style', but you will find that his clues are invariably sound and that (with the help of Chambers) you will always know if you have the right answer. They are puzzles of the very highest class. Good luck!

Thanks, deslyxic - I either hadn't read that note or had forgotten about it. To be honest, it makes things worse - presumably if Azed includes a word like 'flapdoodle' in a puzzle he will now not indicate that it 'appears in earlier editions' because it appears in the 2016 revision. This would confuse anyone who is looking for the word in the 2014 printing (shown as the recommended reference), because it isn't there! The EV and Listener puzzles both modified their primary reference to 'Chambers Dictionary (2016)' over a year ago and I really think Azed should have done the same.
