It's rather a nice clue, in fact - isn't there a biblical phrase about "Ruth stood amidst the alien corn" (though a quick Google only turned up Keats referring to it in "Ode to a nightingale")

I haven't checked it out, Chris, but weren't the lines from Keat's poem based on the book of Ruth in the Bible?

Google still refuses to give me anything on early pages - I'm blowed if I'm going to walk upstairs to find a bible.
I'm reminded of "Swallows and Amazons". The Amazon's captain was Nancy Blackett. She was christened Ruth, but her uncle (Captain Flint) told her that the Amazons wer ruthless...

The clue has echoes of Norah Jarman's wonderful winning entry from a 1970 Ximenes competition for CALLOUS (in which one 'J. Crowther' was highly commended):
