Meursault and I seem to be doing a double act. When I penned my last two answers there were no replies to the questioners that I could see on the forum.

Just about there, though I haven't tracked down all the longer words of the pairs (and probably won't). My only gap is the unchecked letter in 16d, any hint would be appreciated.

Planks, the definer is 'pots' the rest is wordplay to the longer word - a subtractive anagram (broken).

That may not be clear. What I meant was that 'broken' is the angram indicator.

I remembered about deleting a letter from the clue before I came back to this forum and sure enough my answer for 33 now makes sense. But still baffled by 29. That's exactly what I was looking for but I can't find the word. Is it in Chambers?

Thanks, found my bearings now. Clearly at the end of my rope, I was only looking for 6 letter answers. I see the word that has to undergo deletion to reach the final answer too.

I now only need the unchecked letter at 1d - which is proving to be extremely annoying - so I will tackle the garden, and return later!!

Some very obscure words in this one, a remarkable feat to construct such a complex grid.

Just got it!! It starts with the 5 letters that I was convinced it ended with - I was assuming that "without" was the cryptic indicator (i.e. meaning surrounding), but it is of course part of the definition.
