28a King being shown in reduced one's rank, having stripes (5)

Is it skunk? (K.for King in sunk - reduced) and a skunk has a stripe but not happy.

Have you given your placed letters correctly? SKUNK doesn't have an N in the middle!

Yes Chris - you are quite right - I misplaced the "n" and didn' t give the "u"

Not a great clue, but I think SKUNK looks OK - could have been phrased more concisely!

Yes Skunk for the reason you say.

Definition is one’s rank having stripes. Rank as in foul smelling.
