Cheers Sammy - I think as regards finding the answer I simply got lucky - just happened to go on the wimbledon website aeltc2010.wimbledon.org/en_GB/about/history/rolls/menroll.html
and happened to come across a list of past winners / runners up and noticed the letter U against the unseeded runners ups alongside the players named in the question.

Elizabeth - if you can't work an answer out to Great Brain QUIZ then leave your answer sheet blank and stop spoiling it for the rest of us who like to pit our wits against our question setter (who incidentally takes a dim view of questions being asked on these sites) If you must persist in asking questions at least have the decency to say it comes from Great Brain Quiz so that unsuspecting forum members don't spoonfeed you answers.

Aha. It all came down to the U!

I notice that Olmert, one of the players I hadn't heard of, beat an unseeded Rod Laver. Everyone remembers Laver as one of the all-time greats.

Puzzled, I'm Puzzled by your comments.

This thread may I suppose be inappropriate in that it's not about a crossword, but it's very obvious that this forum provides help to solvers. That help includes discussions, hints and sometimes answers.

If you don't like that, why are you here? And who gave you the job of trying to stop us discussing something that's clearly in the public domain?

I always thought that setters intended puzzles to be thought about, discussed, debated, criticised... and, God forbid, enjoyed.

The answer given is totally wrong so there is no harm done anyway.
