Thanks Laurel and Scorpiojo, I've seen it answered elsewhere as CUBES but I literally have no idea why. I've tried playing around with the numbers in the clue (their square and cubes and their roots, and also the number of the clue itself, 24D, but to no avail!

Would it be to do with the lights in the grid?
15x15=225, but still don't quite see it.

Hi Mattrom, it does say "here" so could well be referencing itself, but, if it is a 15x15 crossword then where does the figure 450 come from and wouldn't they be squares not cubes?

If there are 2 crosswords in the RTE, that would equal 450... she said, clutching at straws :(
