Content of oceans symbolised (in various cases) in barnacles (6,8)
I think the answer is “sodium chloride”, but I can’t see why.
Can anyone explain please?

Inside barnacles is NACL and NaCl is the Sodium Chloride

This was asked earlier and I think it was agreed that the answer is got from the letters Na (Sodium) & Cl (Chloride) in 'BarNaCles - you have to change the N & C in to upper case, hence the 'Various cases' reference)

Thank you.

I had enough letters to guess the answer, but couldn’t parse.

Nothing to do with captain haddock then.
