Can anyone explain what the answer to 26, 27 across has to do with uncovering magic?

There is a bit of magic to ***-based photography. There are well document scientific papers on the subject and Kodak was one of the better known companies producing lab books and chemicals supporting the processes. One thing that was studied and measured was the effect whereby *** *** was converted to *** when photons were introduced. They certainly understood the consequences but never understood exactly why *** *** could capture a photon and perform the conversion (we are talking about 19th century tech here). This is the magic component of photography and is elevated to this state because any phenomenon that can be scientifically observed and duplicated while not being understood is magic.
